CT Spurs CEO gives update on Velebayi’s potential overseas move

Cape Town Spurs CEO Alexi Efstathiou has given the latest update on the potential overseas move of Kaizer Chiefs target Asanele Velebayi.

The 21-year-old winger has been the subject of interest from the Soweto giants, who are still in the market to strengthen the squad for Nasreddine Nabi ahead of the start of the 2024/25 Betway Premiership season.

He’s one of the players who could still make a move with the new season having started already in the second-tier.

Velebayi emerged as one of the rare talents in the last campaign amidst the struggles of the Urban Warriors, who were ultimately relegated to the Motsepe Foundation Championship.

He attracted significant interest from Naturena and internationally.

Amakhosi are said to have had their bids rejected by the Warriors as they deemed their player to be of greater value than the amount proposed by Chiefs.

Meanwhile, in an interview with this website, Efstathiou expressed optimism about Velebayi’s prospects of securing a move to a club abroad, emphasising that an overseas transfer remains a viable possibility.

“Like many other enquiries, there was an enquiry, it’s not dead in the water,” said Efstathiou during the interview with FARPost.

“But obviously there are things that need to happen on the other side. So, that can still come off, anything is possible.”

Meanwhile, Spurs recently bid farewell to Ashley Cupido who was one of the key players for the club in the recent seasons.

He went on to sign for Stellenbosch FC, outmaneuvering Chiefs in securing his signature.

However, Spurs also welcomed Mervin Boji from Stellies who was part of the deal that saw Cupido heading in the opposite direction.
