Vellios reveals what really happened in the Cupido-Boji transfer

Stellenbosch FC’s DStv Diski Challenge [DDC] head coach Evangelos Vellios has revealed what happened behind the scenes in the Ashley Cupido-Mervin Boji’s transfer.

Four days ago, the Cape Winelands-based outfit confirmed the acquisition of Cupido from Cape Town Spurs, beating Kaizer Chiefs for his signature.

Cupido joined the Steve Barker-coached side as a suitable replacement for Iqraam Rayners, who recently signed for Mamelodi Sundowns on a long-term deal.

However, Cupido’s move to Stellies saw Boji joining Spurs as the immediate replacement of the departed Cupido.

Interestingly, Boji opened his account for Spurs on Friday when the Urban Warriors secured a 1-0 slender win against Venda FC at home.

The Stellies DDC team coach Vellios put it on record that the club’s hierarchy were not open to losing Boji because they knew what he was capable of.

But he noted that the club has no choice but to let Boji go as Spurs were adamant about getting Boji for them to finalise Cupido’s transfer.

In the last two seasons, Boji found the back of the net on 32 occasions from 30 games in the DDC for Stellies.

“I mean Boji is an unbelievable goal-scorer. He scored yesterday for Spurs coming on and taking a penalty in the 96th minute it shows how great he is,” said Vellios.

“Obviously, all of us at the club we wish him all the best. But I think it’s a good step for him obviously Cupido coming this way and Boji going that way.

“It’s important to note that the club didn’t want Boji to go, but Spurs were adamant and that was key. That’s testament to Boji that he’s so highly thought of, with both teams fighting for him because we know what his potential is like.”

Vellios continued: “So, we miss him dearly. Mervin scored 32 goals in 30 appearances in the last two seasons in the DCC. That kind of number is unheard of.

“I’m hoping and trusting that he would do the same at Spurs but we have other players who need to stand and carry on what he used to do for us.”

Stellenbosch DDC side commenced their 2024/25 season with a 1-1 draw against the newbies Magesi FC at the Old Peter Mokaba Stadium on Saturday.
