Stellenbosch FC set MTN8 final date with Orlando Pirates

Stellenbosch FC have set up an MTN8 final date against Orlando Pirates following their 1-0 win over Mamelodi Sundowns in the tournament’s second-leg semi-final tie at the Moses Mabhida Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

‘Stellies’ came into this showdown with a 1-0 scoreline advantage after securing an important win away from home in the first-leg last weekend in Pretoria.

Lehlogonolo Mojela’s 49th-minute goal was enough to give ‘Stellies’ a win at home and propel them into the finals.

As a result, Stellenbosch have progressed to the MTN8 final with a 2-0 win on aggregate against ‘The Brazilians’.

Below are the talking points from this entertaining encounter.

MAMELODI SUNDOWNS FAIL TO BECOME THE FIRST TEAM TO OVERTURN A FIRST-LEG DEFICIT

Sundowns failed to become the first-ever PSL club to overturn a first-leg deficit and progress to the final.

In this tournament’s history, no club has ever lost the first leg of the semi-final and come back to progress to the final [in the 14 previous occasions], according to Opta Jabu statistics.

STELLENBOSCH FC BECOMES THE SECOND TO BEAT SUNDOWNS HOME AND AWAY

‘Stellies’ become the second club to beat ‘Bafana Ba Style’ home and away in a two-legged domestic cup match after Moroka Swallows in the 2000 Rothmans Cup Round of 16.

WHY STELLENBOSCH FC HOSTED THEIR GAME IN DURBAN

The Cape Winelands-based outfit was forced to host their MTN8 semi-final tie at Moses Mabhida Stadium due to the rehabilitation of their playing surfaces at Danie Craven Stadium.

According to the club, this comes after the damage caused to the pitch by a combination of the prevailing wet weather conditions and a strenuous rugby season.

Meanwhile, due to scheduling conflicts, Athlone Stadium and DHL Cape Town Stadium are unavailable to host their match.

STELLENBOSCH FC TO MEET ORLANDO PIRATES IN THE FINAL

With ‘Stellies’ having advanced to the finals on a 2-0 win on aggregate, the side will now face the defending champions Pirates.

‘The Buccaneers’ cruised to the final after defeating Cape Town City FC 3-1 on aggregate.
