How Fawaaz Basadien is staying grounded amid Chiefs transfer buzz
Stellenbosch FC defender Fawaaz Basadien has revealed how he is staying grounded as Kaizer Chiefs continue their pursuit for his services.
Chiefs looking to return to the ‘glory days’ are seriously after the signature of Stellenbosch’s left-back mainstay, Basadien.
The 27-year-old has been a major subject in the transfer market, with the Soweto giants pushing hard to secure him from the Cape Town-based side.
Chiefs have had their bid for Fawaaz Basadien rejected as they continue their search to strengthen their left-back options ahead of the new season under the leadership of coach Nasreddine Nabi.
But they appear to be relentless in their pursuit of his services. And even Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos has admitted it would be difficult for Stellenbosch to retain him.
Basadien has been impressive and earned himself a call-up to the national team for the 2025 AFCON qualifiers against Uganda on 6 September and South Sudan on 10 September in Group K.
He started the new 2024/25 campaign on a high note, contributing three goals and an assist. Due to his brilliance, Stellies has managed to outsmart Mamelodi Sundowns in the MTN8 semi-finals to book a spot in the final.
WHAT DEFENDER FAWAAZ BASADIEN SAID ABOUT CHIEFS’ INTEREST
And as his stock continues to rise, Basadien has opened up about Kaizer Chiefs’ interest and how he stays grounded as the transfer saga rages.
“For me personally, I control what I can control. I’m contracted to Stellenbosch, that’s where I can play. All I can do is put in good performances, week in and week out,” Basadien said.
“I’m there to do a job, never mind what is going around. Obviously, it’s good to have a club like Chiefs interested in you, but I am contracted to Stellenbosch.”
Ahead of the upcoming 2025 AFCON qualifiers, the highly-rated defender Basadien added: “Being with the club is different from being with the national team. When you are with the team, you will be there for the club only, but for the national team, you’ll be representing the whole country.
“So obviously, you have to pull together to achieve what the country wants to achieve. So it’s just trying to adapt when coming to the national team and when playing for your club,” he said.
