Chippa United coach confirms interest in Sundowns midfielder

Chippa United head coach Kwanele Kopo has confirmed the club’s interest in signing Mamelodi Sundowns midfielder Sammy Seabi for the 2024/25 Betway Premiership season.

‘The Chilli Boys’ have been busy in the current transfer window, beefing up their squad for the upcoming campaign.

They have signed players such as Andile Jali, Aphelele Teto, Boy Madingwane, Giovanni Philander, Thobani Jacobs, Sifiso Mazibuko, Blessing Jali, Gadinkame Modise, Azola Matrose, and Xolani Sithole.

In a bid to build a competitive squad, Chippa also tied down first-choice goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali with a new three-year-contract. The contract extension put to rest all speculations about Nwabali’s future after the Nigerian international reportedly attracted interest from various clubs, locally and abroad.

Meanwhile, the Gqeberha-based announced the departures of Luvuyo Memela, Roscoe Petersen, Loydt Kazapua, Siyabonga Nhlapo, Siphelele Luthuli, Menzi Ndwandwe, Andile Fakude, Kamohelo Mahlatsi, Diego Apollis, Khanyisile Mayo, Siseko Manona, Yurig Conwood, and, Andile Mbenyane.

WHAT DID KWANELE KOPO SAY ABOUT THE POSSIBILITY OF SIGNING SEABI?

With Chippa aiming to improve on their 12th place in the previous season, Kopo has revealed that Seabi is a player they would like to have.

The holding midfielder is facing an uncertain future at Masandawana, and FARPost recently reported that he could leave the club on a permanent move. Seabi returned to ‘The Brazilians’ at the start of last season. However, he failed to break into the team’s matchday squad after featuring in just four matches in all competitions.

“The transfer window has not closed yet, so we are talking about a few players on the team. I would not like to comment on one player, Sammy Seabi. There’s always speculation about players,” Kopo said.

“I think we all know that Sammy Seabi is a very good midfielder, an experienced player, and he played for Chippa United before. He played for Sundowns and Sekhukhune [United].

“Would he be a positive addition to the Chippa family? Definitely, and we have a few other players because we want to build a team with a good blend of experience and youth.

“So we brought in a lot of youngsters; I think we brought more young players than senior players; with Chippa not being a big club financially, we need to be a club that if we are not winning trophies, we need to make a return on investment through the player sale.”
