‘I’ll not be here for long’: Vusumuzi Vilakazi on DDC

Vusumuzi Vilakazi dropped an odd statement after his first DStv Diski Challenge match as AmaZulu FC reserves head coach.

‘Kanu’, as he’s affectionately known, returned to Diski Challenge where he honed his skills during his time with Golden Arrows juniors between 2015 and 2020.

He emerged as one of the promising coaches in the country, guiding Abafana Bes’thende to two Diski Challenge titles.

He joined Usuthu following his exit from Richards Bay. AmaZulu began their 2024/25 campaign with a 0-0 draw against Joseph Makhanya’s Orlando Pirates.

Speaking to the media after the match, Vilakazi insisted he did not return to Diski Challenge to prove himself, revealing that he was “not there to stay” and was “going somewhere”.

“No, I don’t think there’s a point to prove,” said Vilakazi.

“I’m happy for my stay at Richards Bay, we are talking now, I’m not with Richards but I’m in the map of Richards Bay because I saved them.

“That’s the impact I need in my coaching career. So, I’ve got a new assignment now which is focusing on making sure that I produce the players for the senior team of AmaZulu.

“So, that’s the focus, other things will come. I’ll not be here for long anyway, I’m going somewhere.”

Vilakazi acknowledged that due to his top-flight experience, there were higher expectations from him compared to other coaches in the league.

He added that his primary focus was on developing players for AmaZulu’s senior side and he expressed his desire to win another DDC championship.

VILAKAZI SAYS HE’S UNDER PRESSURE TO DO WELL DUE TO TOP-FLIGHT EXPERIENCE

“Pressure is always there and maybe my pressure is more than other coaches’ [because] I’m from the highest level,” he added.

“They expect a lot from me, so I need to work hard in making sure that we achieve what we want to achieve but I’m going back to the principles we spoke about even when we won the championship [with Golden Arrows DDC] two times.

“The focus was not on the championship but the focus was in making sure that the players apply the principles of football correctly.

“Then automatically you see yourself in number two or one. Then you start maintaining staying in that position.

“But I’m not here for games I’m here to compete. I’d love to win it again.”
