How Njabulo Blom’s return could redefine Kaizer Chiefs’ midfield

Njabulo Blom’s homecoming to Kaizer Chiefs is not just a sentimental reunion but a strategic acquisition that could redefine the team’s dynamics.

The once-promising destroyer has evolved into a multi-faceted midfield maestro, equipped with the skills to bolster both defence and attack.

“I’m very happy for Njabulo, ex-player; he is a boy from the family,” Chiefs coach Nasreddine Nabi told journalists. “I’m sure he has a big personality and big quality.”

Blom was a key player at St Louis under former coach Bradley Carnell, making 37 appearances across all competitions for the American club. His defensive instincts remain sharp as ever. Blom’s ability to read the game, anticipate danger and execute precise tackles makes him a formidable barrier in front of the backline.

His 1v1 marking is exceptional, and he’s not afraid to impose himself on opponents, regardless of their stature. His work rate and commitment are unwavering, earning him comparisons to the tireless N’Golo Kanté during his time at St. Louis.

But how much more can Chiefs’ coach Nasreddine Nabi expect from the Bafana Bafana midfielder?

The Soweto-born midfielder’s time in the MLS has seen a marked improvement in his technical abilities. He’s now comfortable orchestrating build-up play, progressing the ball through carries or accurate passes and pushing the team higher up the pitch.

His versatility allows him to operate effectively as a box-to-box midfielder, contributing in advanced positions with combinations, dribbles, crosses, and even shots on goal. His ability to receive the ball between the lines adds another layer to his offensive arsenal.

The 24-year-old’s tactical understanding has grown significantly, making him a valuable asset for Nabi. His adaptability provides the Tunisian mentor with more options in terms of team setup. His familiarity with the club’s culture and demands further enhances his value. Samkelo Zwane, who has featured consistently during pre-season, could benefit from playing alongside him.

The Chiefs academy graduate return is a significant boost for Chiefs. He’s not just an upgrade on the player who left but a more complete, mature, and versatile midfielder capable of impacting the game on both ends of the pitch. His presence will add flexibility, dynamism and leadership to the squad.

In fact, Blom’s arrival addresses multiple concerns for the Soweto giants. His presence eases worries about maintaining structure, breaking through presses, building up play, and progressing the ball forward.
‘Stopper’ enables Nabi to nurture Zwane’s development without placing undue pressure on the young midfielder.

Additionally, it frees up Yusuf Maart to operate in his preferred eight role. This tactical shift also empowers attacking midfielders like former Mamelodi Sundowns star Gaston Sirino and Mduduzi Shabalala to focus on their offensive contributions.

Chiefs’ Sporting Director, Kaizer Motaung Jr, believes his experience in the MLS and his familiarity with Amakhosi’s ethos make him a valuable addition to the squad. “We look forward to seeing his impact on the field because we know how valuable he is to our game model,” Motaung Jr told the club’s website.

Blom is also delighted to be back at “a Club that holds a special place in my heart”. “I look forward to working with the team and contributing to our success under Coach Nasreddine Nabi. The support from the fans has always motivated me, and I can’t wait to play in front of the Khosi nation again.”

With Blom in the mix, Chiefs’ rebuild takes another step forward. He joins other signings, such as Fiacre Ntwari, Bradley Cross, Miguel Inacio, Bongani Sam, Gaston Sirino, and Rushwin Dortley.
