What Gavin Hunt thinks of Sundowns amid recent struggles

SuperSport United coach Gavin Hunt has expressed his opinion on Mamelodi Sundowns’ recent struggles and whether the club’s dominance may be waning.

Masandawana, who have won the league seven times in a row, went through significant changes ahead of the start of the season.

Rulani Mokwena’s departure was followed by Manqoba Mngqithi taking over the reins, with Steve Komphela and Romain Folz joining the technical team.

The Brazilians have had a poor start to the 2024/25 season. They secured a narrow 1-0 victory through own goal against Polokwane City in the MTN8 quarterfinal.

On Sunday, they were eliminated from the competition by Stellenbosch FC, who secured a 2-0 aggregate victory in the two-legged semifinal.

Hunt believes Sundowns deserved to win the past three games, saying they were unfortunate to lose the two semi-finals.

GAVIN HUNT’S THOUGHTS ABOUT SUNDOWNS LAST THREE GAMES

“They should have won all three games so…,” said Hunt.

“So, people must…the problem we play them next. That’s the problem.

“If you’re fair, you’re honest and you know football. They should have won but they didn’t. That’s football, sometimes you can draw, draw, draw or two losses or whatever by fine margins.”

While many have suggested that Sundowns’ dominance may be fading following recent changes, Hunt maintains that the club’s quality will ensure their continued competitiveness.

HUNT ON DOWNS – ‘THEY HAVE DONE IT FOR LAST SEVEN YEARS’

“No, no, no, I think they are still…whoever can finish above them will win the league, if they do, if anybody does,” he added.

“They [Sundowns] still got the quality, they still got a know-how, they still got a…

“People think it’s easy, when you’re winning, you need to keep winning and it’s very difficult to keep winning.

“They have done it for the last seven years. So, you’ve got to commend them. They bought well, they bought players and they always have a fighting chance.”

Interestingly, Matsatsantsa will open their 2024/25 Betway Premiership campaign with a clash against crosstown rivals, Bafana Ba Style.

The match will take place on Tuesday, 17 September at Loftus Versveld with kickoff set for 7:30 pm.
