Marumo Gallants sign ex-Magesi defender

Betway Premiership side Marumo Gallants have re-signed defender Lebogang Mabotja a few days after leaving Magesi FC.

Mabotja and Magesi parted ways this week after a few weeks since joining the club.

The defender is now reunited with coach Dan Malesela, whom he worked with at the same club two seasons ago. The 32-year-old was part of the squad that reached the semi-finals of the CAF Confederation Cup.

Speaking at the official launch of the Betway Premiership, Malesela admitted that he was pleased to have brought in some players to the team. This includes Mabotja, Kamohelo Mahlatsi, and Xola Mlambo while goalkeeper Washington Arubi has also returned.

“Fortunately, this time around as much as there are a number of players I found at the club, I had the luxury of bringing in certain players at the club,” said Malesela.

“So we tried to choose carefully so that we don’t have people that will be to adjust to the system that we are trying to apply in our matches.”

Malesela says he has been working out on a few challenges, including reducing the bigger size of his squad.

WHAT ARE SOME OF THE CHALLENGES DAN MALESELA HAS HAD TO DEAL WITH?

“Everything has its own challenges. But we are managing a lot of things. There is a bit of challenge there and there, but we are managing,” he said.

“The first one was to get the team right, to get the playing personnel right. We have managed to reduce the team from 48 to like 33. That was the first thing and also to see if we could bring in a way or style of play that can be suitable for everyone. Not only for me but for the players as well.”

Marumo will open their 2024/25 campaign with a home match against Kaizer Chiefs at the Toyota Stadium on Saturday, 14 September.
