Njabulo Blom’s Chiefs move sparks Hugo Broos’ optimism

Njabulo Blom’s recent transfer to Kaizer Chiefs has sparked renewed hope for a Bafana Bafana comeback, with national team coach Hugo Broos expressing optimism about the midfielder’s potential.

The Belgian mentor has publicly voiced his concerns about Blom’s lack of game time abroad, emphasising the importance of consistent playing opportunities for players seeking national team selection.

The 24-year-old returned to Amakhosi on loan from MLS outfit St Louis City SC. Newly appointed Amakhosi coach Nasreddine Nabi has hailed his signing, insisting he will help shore up his midfield.

“It’s good to go abroad, but you have to play,” Broos stated, underscoring the need for Blom to prove his worth on the field.

The Chiefs academy graduate has represented South Africa twice at the senior level, with his last appearance coming in an international friendly against Eswatini in October 2023. Since then, players like Siphephelo Sithole and Teboho Mokoena have solidified their positions in the defensive midfield role, while Orlando Pirates’ Thalente Mbatha has recently earned his first call-up.

COULD CHIEFS RETURN BE THE TURNING POINT FOR BLOM’S INTERNATIONAL CAREER?

Broos’ comments suggest that Blom’s move to Chiefs could be a turning point in his international career. If the midfielder can secure regular playing time and regain his top form, he may once again find himself in the national team fold.

“Let’s hope that now at Chiefs he will play. And that he will play good,” Broos said, hinting that Blom’s performances for his new club will be closely monitored.

Blom’s potential return to Bafana would add depth and competition to the squad, particularly in the defensive midfield position. His ability to break up play, distribute the ball effectively, and contribute defensively could prove valuable for the national team.
