Manyama makes honest admission about Erasmus’ possible move to CT City

Cape Town City FC assistant coach Lebogang Manyama has made an honest admission about Kermit Erasmus’ possible move to the club ahead of the 2024/25 Betway Premiership season.

The highly-rated forward, Erasmus, is a free agent following his exit from Orlando Pirates at the end of last season.

Erasmus was in Pirates colours for the past two seasons after signing in July 2022 from Mamelodi Sundowns.

This was Erasmus’ second stint with the Buccaneers after being in the books of Pirates between 2013 and 2016. The Bafana Bafana international left Pirates in 2016 to join French outfit Stade Rennais F.C.

In the previous two seasons at Pirates, Erasmus featured in 36 matches across all competitions. He scored five goals and provided five assists.

The 34-year-old faced tough competition in the striking position from players such as Zakhele Lepasa, Evidence Makgopa, and Tshegofatso Mabasa.

WHAT DID LEBOGANG MANYAMA SAY ABOUT KERMIT ERASMUS?

With Erasmus linked with a move to Cape Town City, Manyama has revealed that his friendship with the goal-poacher has made it difficult for him to take part in the negotiations.

Erasmus is familiar with ‘The Citizens’, having played for the club from 2018 to 2020 and registered 17 goals in all competitions.

“Look, to be quite honest, that’s between the club boss [John Comitis] and the coach [Eric Tinkler]. They’ve had the conversations with Kermit,” Manyama said.

“I know how good he is because I played with him since Under-13, him and Kamohelo Mokotjo; I played against them in that famous SuperSport United team of Masibusane Zongo and Thato Mokeke.

“So I know how good he is, but the chairman and the coach make the final decision. Could he help us? Yes, Kermit is quality when he’s on top of his game, fit and ready to play.

“He’s one of the best [strikers] in the country; the window closes on the 20th of September, if I’m not mistaken. So there’s still enough time to see what happens.

“We’ve got games to play; you never know what might happen because football has a lot of things that happen very quickly.

“Unfortunately things like injuries happen, we might need him or we might not need him but that’s football for you. I haven’t been involved in the capacity that I work with the coach, and Kermit is my friend as well, so I’m a bit in the middle.

“But yeah, I wouldn’t mind having Kermit Erasmus in my club anytime because I know that the fit and focused Erasmus could take us to the championship.”
