Desiree Ellis: ‘Chiefs’ women’s team would ‘elevate the entire league’

Banyana Banyana coach Desiree Ellis has revealed how big it will be for Kaizer Chiefs to have a women’s team.

The four-time CAF Women’s Coach of the Year noted that having Chiefs’ women’s team in the Hollywoodbets Super League would ‘elevate the entire league’.

She insists that what Mamelodi Sundowns, TS Galaxy and Royal AM have done for women’s football has played a significant role in the development of women’s football in South Africa.

The Banyana mentor believes that if Chiefs were to form a women’s team, sponsorships would come to the party as Amakhosi are a big brand.

A few months ago, we witnessed Stellenbosch FC becoming the latest club to form a women’s team [Stellenbosch FC Ladies], now competing in the SASOL Women’s League with the hope of securing promotion to the Super League.

The Cape Winelands-based outfit are the first club to form a professional women’s football team in Stellenbosch.

‘I THINK IT WILL BE BIG FOR WOMEN’S FOOTBALL,” SAYS DR DESIREE ELLIS

Ellis highlighted that Chiefs may not be performing well at the moment, but establishing a women’s team “would be big for women’s football.”

“I have been saying that all along. They might be not doing so well on the football field but they are still a top team in the country” said the Banyana coach during the launch of Twinning Project at Johannesburg Correctional Centre.

“You know, they have so many fans but them on their own having a women’s team I think sponsorship would come on board and they will bring more brands.

“I think the game will be elevated. You see what Mamelodi Sundowns has done for women’s football, including TS Galaxy and Royal AM.”

Ellis continued: “But I think Kaizer Chiefs coming on board, even Orlando Pirates, I think it will be big for women’s football and take it to a different level”
