Billiat outlines his expectations after coming out of international retirement

Ex-Kaizer Chiefs and Mamelodi Sundowns star Khama Billiat has outlined his expectations on returning from international football retirement.

The 34-year-old took the decision to quit the Zimbabwe National Team prior to the 2021 AFCON finals which were hosted by Cameroon.

Additionally, that decision was met with mixed feelings as he was a vital cog in ‘The Warriors’ set-up alongside with another former Chiefs star Knowledge Musona at that time.

Three years after quitting, Billiat is back in the Zimbabwe Warriors fold under unheralded German coach Michael Nees.

He is expected to be one of the key players to provide guidance to budding Zimbabwean stars that include Marumo Gallants‘ Daniel Msendami.

In his first interview after bouncing back, the 2016 PSL Footballer of the Year opened up about his expectations as The Warriors prepare for the 2025 AFCON qualifiers.

Billiat was in action when Zimbabwe played out to a goalless draw away from home against Kenya in their Group J AFCON qualifiers tie on Friday, 6 September. They will next take on Cameroon on 10 September.

“I just came back from retirement. This call-up means a lot for me to represent our great country, Zimbabwe, against Kenya and Cameroon.

“It’s very important for me; I hope we will do well under our new coach. It’s a new set-up, so we expect a new trajectory of winning all games.

“I hope it will be different. So far it has been great for us, he has been great so far. He is a great motivator to us and his trust gives me more energy to keep up working hard,” Billiat said.

Billiat made his debut for Zimbabwe in 2011 during the 2012 AFCON qualifiers against Mali. They won 1-0.

As his stock rose, he earned over 40 caps. In addition, he is rated as one of the best players that have graced the PSL.

Billiat formed a fiery partnership with his childhood friend and teammate, Musona, who also retired from international football.

Furthermore, the stylish forward is in the books of Yadah FC. He is among the top goalscorers having scored ten goals in 25 games played in Zimbabwe’s PSL.
