Yahaya Dawuni snubs Ghana clubs, eyes Betway Premiership move
Ghanaian defender Yahaya Dawuni is attracting interest from Ghana Premier League clubs Heart of Lions and Legon Cities, but the 20-year-old centre-back is reportedly prioritising a move to South Africa, where he is currently in talks with a Betway Premiership side.
Dawuni, who joined Asante Kotoko last summer from Susubiribi Sporting Club, is a highly-rated defender in the West African nation.
The tough-as-teak defender previously impressed with Susubiribi, scoring five goals and providing six assists in 67 appearances, earning him a call-up to the Ghana national Under-23 team.
While both Heart of Lions and Legon Cities are eager to secure Dawuni’s services for the upcoming season, the defender seems intent on pursuing a move to South Africa, where he believes he has a better chance of career progression in the PSL.
Dawuni’s situation underscores the competitive nature of the Ghanaian transfer market as clubs jostle to strengthen their squads. However, the defender’s desire for more playing time and his preference for a move to South Africa appear to be the driving factors in his decision.
Dawuni, now a free agent after securing his clearance from Kotoko, is actively seeking a new club where he can continue his development. The South African transfer window closes on 20 September 2024.
WHAT YAHAYA DAWUNI SAID ABOUT HIS FUTURE
“Playing in the Betway Premiership has always been a dream of mine. The level of competition, the exposure… it’s where I want to be,” the Ghana youth international told FARPost.
“I’m currently in South Africa exploring my options. I’m confident that I can make an impact here and help any team I join. The Betway Premiership is the perfect place for me to continue my development as a player. I’m ready to work hard and prove myself.
“I’m grateful for the interest from clubs in Ghana, but my heart is set on South Africa. As a player, I’m excited about the possibilities here.
“I know I have what it takes to succeed in the Betway Premiership. I’m just waiting for the right opportunity to showcase my abilities.”
With Dawuni currently in South Africa and in discussions with a Betway Premiership club, it seems increasingly likely that his future lies in South Africa, presenting a new challenge and opportunity for the young defender.
