FIFA programme signals new chapter for ex-Amajita coach Thabo Senong
Former Amajita—South African U-20 coach Thabo Senong is likely to embark on a new coaching journey after participating in FIFA’s Talent Development Scheme (TDS).
The programme, aimed at fostering long-term player growth, brought Senong into a cohort of 14 new tacticians who are set to make a significant impact on the global football landscape.
His presence at a FIFA workshop in Zurich suggests an upcoming appointment within a member association where he could focus on youth development. This aligns with the TDS goal of enhancing opportunities for young players and elevating national team standards.
FIFA’s Chief of Global Football Development and former Arsenal FC coach, Arsène Wenger, highlighted the scheme’s potential to provide opportunities for all talented players, regardless of origin. The initiative aims to establish 75 elite academies worldwide by 2027.
“It’s becoming a big machine now. It is moving football forward in every single country. Let’s not forget that the core of our thinking is to give every talent in the whole world a chance,” Wenger said according to the FIFA website.
THABO SENONG’S EXPERIENCE IN YOUTH FOOTBALL KEY
Senong’s experience and expertise will undoubtedly be invaluable in this endeavour. His coaching journey has been marked by significant achievements with youth teams.
He led South Africa’s Under 20 national team, the Amajitas, to the Africa Cup of Nations and the FIFA World Cup in both 2017 and 2019. His success with the Amajitas includes clinching the COSAFA Challenge Cup in 2017 and 2018. In August 2019, he took on the managerial role for the Lesotho national football team.
He has also worked with Mamelodi Sundowns, Orlando Pirates and Sekhukhune United. His most recent job was with Tanzania side Singida Big Stars, where he initially served as an assistant before being elevated to the head coach position.
Senong has also been a coaching instructor for the CAF D and B Coaching Diplomas.
The Zurich workshop further equipped coaches with insights into practical coaching, player observation, and elite player development principles.
Senong’s participation in the TDS indicates a promising new chapter in his coaching career, potentially impacting football development on a global scale.
