Former Chippa United coaches find new homes

Former Chippa United coaches Siyabulela Gwambi and Kurt Lentjies have found new homes in the SAFA Eastern Cape ABC Motsepe League.

Gwambi, who served as assistant and interim coach at ‘The Chilli Boys’ in the PSL, has been appointed head coach of Gqeberha United FC.

Gqeberha United are a new side in the Eastern Cape’s third-tier league. They bought the status of Amampondo United ahead of the 2024/25 campaign.

The Gqeberha-based outfit has hit the ground running under the tutelage of Gwambi. They have already started their pre-season as the new season looms large.

The club’s mandate is to challenge for league triumph. They are also hoping to qualify for the national playoffs come the end of the season.

KURT LENTJIES JOINS FC RAVENS AS A HEAD COACH

Meanwhile, FC Ravens have acquired the services of ex-‘Chilli Boys’ mentor Lentjies as their new head coach for the upcoming season.

Lentjies’ last coaching gig was with Chippa’s feeder side, Peacemakers FC, about a year ago in the ABC Motsepe League.

The 39-year-old former player is also expected to guide FC Ravens to the national playoffs and ultimately reach promotion to the Motsepe Foundation Championship.

Last season, we witnessed a team from the Eastern Cape gain promotion to the SA second-tier league. This was after they won the 2023/24 ABC Motsepe League National Playoffs. The team in question is none other than Highbury FC.

With the new season fast approaching, it would be interesting to see how Gwambi and Lentjies, who have coached in the SA elite league, would excel in the lower division with the two amateur clubs under their guidance.

SAFA Eastern Cape will announce the starting date of the 2024/25 ABC Motsepe League season in due course.
