Bafana coach Hugo Broos addresses recent inconsistent results
Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos has addressed the national team’s recent inconsistent performances since the 2023 AFCON in Ivory Coast.
Broos has dismissed concerns that the team’s recent inconsistent results indicate a decline in quality. Despite drawing four of their last five matches, including a surprising tie against Andorra, ranked 164th in the FIFA world rankings, the Bafana coach maintains that his team has faced formidable opponents.
Their lone victory in this period came against neighbouring Zimbabwe in a FIFA World Cup qualifier.
As Bafana prepare to face South Sudan in their upcoming 2025 Africa Cup of Nations [AFCON] qualifier, Broos insists that the recent matches have been challenging tests against strong opponents, not merely easy fixtures.
The clash between South Africa and South Sudan at the recently refurbished Juba National Stadium will kick-off at 15:00 on Tuesday, 10 September [this afternoon].
Before this tie, Bafana played out to a 2-2 draw against Uganda at Orlando Stadium in the opening match of the qualifying campaign last Friday.
WHY THE RECENT RESULTS DO NOT WORRY COACH HUGO BROOS
“About the draws, you also have to look at who you played. We didn’t play against the worst teams in Africa; we played against the best teams,” he said.
“Nigeria and Algeria, for example. All teams who are in the top 10 [in Africa] and not at home. We played there [away]. So I think those are results that you can expect and it has nothing to do with our qualities or not having played a good game. I think it was just the teams we faced.

“We played very good games against Algeria and Nigeria and all others. We just played against Andorra, but okay, we used a second team. It was just a training game for us,” he added.
“We also played a draw against Uganda, but we will see next month how strong Uganda is. So, this is not a weak team. This is a strong team, powerful and dedicated on the field. So it’s tough to play against.”
