Ex-Ghana coach spots 4 rising stars at NJM Challenge

Former Ghana national team assistant coach Maxwell Konadu, with a championship pedigree from his home country, spent the weekend immersed in the NJM Top 8 Soccer Challenge in Thohoyandou.

Amidst the excitement of the eight-team competition at Rabali Stadium, Konadu, currently Black Leopards coach, has identified four promising young players who he believes have the potential to develop professional football careers.

This tournament, the brainchild of Nyambeni Jones Maphalaphathwa, founder and group CEO of NJM Group of Companies, aims to provide a platform for budding talent in the Thohoyandou area.

Konadu praised the tournament, stating, “The tournament is excellent. This initiative is vital. The youth in this area should be grateful to NJM for organizing a tournament like this, allowing them to showcase their talent to the world.”

The coach in the Motsepe Foundation Championship emphasised the significance of grassroots football in player development. “This is where it all begins. Grassroots football is essential for uncovering hidden talent in remote areas. A star can emerge from here, so I think it’s a fantastic initiative. It’s great for the community, and the players should be thrilled.”

“We’ve seen about four boys who I believe possess that special talent,” Konadu explained. “The majority of them are good players, but there’s a distinction between good players and exceptional ones.”

The Black Leopards coach is already taking steps to nurture these promising talents. “I’ve asked them [Leopards officials] to speak with the players,” Konadu revealed. “One of them is currently writing exams, so we’ll let him focus and continue to monitor his progress.”

This tournament not only showcases the region’s footballing potential but also underscores the importance of grassroots initiatives in fostering the next generation of football stars. With Konadu’s keen eye for talent, these four young players might be taking their first steps toward fulfilling careers in professional football.
