The chat Majoro had with Morgan Gould about Stellenbosch’s five-year plan

Veteran PSL striker Lehlohonolo Majoro has shed light on a conversation he once had with former Stellenbosch FC defender Morgan Gould about the club’s ambitious five-year plan, which has now come to fruition.

Towards the twilight of his career, Gould made a brief appearance at Stellenbosch FC during the 2019/20 season. His stay was short-lived, lasting only one season and involving 11 appearances across all competitions.

But the 2019/20 campaign marked a significant milestone for Stellenbosch, as they made their debut in the SA top-flight following their promotion from the Motsepe Foundation Championship. Since then, the Cape Winelands club has solidified its position in the PSL, establishing itself as a formidable opponent.

The club’s ambitious five-year plan, however, concluded at the end of last season. Despite this, the 2023/24 campaign proved to be their most successful to date. Stellenbosch secured their first-ever PSL trophy, the Carling Knockout Cup, and finished third on the league table, earning a historic qualification to the CAF Confederation Cup.

In an interview with FARPost, Majoro revealed that Gould had shared ‘The Stellies’ ambitious five-year plan. According to Gould, the club’s goals were to secure a trophy and sell at least four players to bigger, more prestigious teams.”

Given the club’s recent successes, this plan has been a resounding success. Stellenbosch has not only clinched a trophy but has also successfully transferred several players to bigger clubs. Iqraam Rayners, Ashley Du Preez, Deano van Rooyen, Antonio van Wyk, Sibongiseni Mthethwa, Olwethu Makhanya, and Anicet Oura are among those who have moved on from Stellenbosch.

“I had the privilege to chat with the legend Morgan Gould, who previously played for Stellenbosch, said Majoro. “He told me about the five-year plan that Stellenbosch had; it’s something that didn’t happen overnight [the club’s success].

“Their five-year plan was they must have won one or two trophies, and they must have sold four players. From what I got, they have achieved their plan.

“They won a trophy [Carling Knockout Cup], they have also sold more than four players. The plan worked, Steve Barker is doing a good job, and Stellenbosch is like a high-performance centre in the Western Cape.”
