Former Bucs star draws parallels between Riveiro’s juggernaut to Krol’s trailblazing era

Former Orlando Pirates midfielder Lebogang Mothibantwa has drawn striking comparisons between the current era under José Riveiro and the era under Ruud Krol, suggesting that the club is once again on the cusp of a golden age.

Under the guidance of Krol, Pirates clinched the league title in the 2010/11 season. Krol’s legacy extended beyond that triumph, as the team he built went on to dominate the league the following season.

The Dutchaman’s tenure also marked a historic milestone as Krol became the first coach to achieve a domestic treble in the PSL era, leading Pirates to victories in the MTN8, Nedbank Cup, and league title in 2010/11.

Unfortunately, Pirates have not claimed another league championship since that season. However, the appointment of José Riveiro has injected renewed optimism into the club. Under Riveiro’s leadership, Pirates have consistently finished second in the league and secured their place in the CAF Champions League for two seasons in a row.

Mothibantwa, a former player under Krol, believes that the current Pirates squad has the potential to dethrone Mamelodi Sundowns and reclaim the league title.

“I think this team is the fittest team ever after that generation of Rudo Krol, our generation,” Mothibantwa told FARPost.

WHY LEBOGANG MOTHIBANTWA BELIEVES ORLANDO PIRATES CAN DETHRONE SUNDOWNS

“Besides their [Pirates] defensive organisation, where I think anyone can play, it’s their midfielders. Those guys are up to standard, and their fitness level is impressive.

“These guys are hungrier. I don’t know what they are doing at training, but I can tell you that it’s a marvel to watch these boys play. They are very good offensively and quick in closing down. Overall, I am very impressed with these boys, and I wish they could be consistent,” he added.

EX-BUCCANEERS MIDFIELDER IMPRESSED WITH COACH JOSE RIVEIRO IMPACT

Mothibantwa went on to express his admiration for the impact that current coach Riveiro has had at the Soweto giants.

He believes that Riveiro’s tactical acumen and ability to foster a winning mentality have transformed the team.

“Pirates have made massive reinforcement in their technical team. Remember, Sundowns has been more advanced with lots of technologies and bringing the game to an international standard,” he said.

“But I am so happy that Pirates didn’t back down and have shown such improvements to come up with modern football. I can put my head on the block and say that it is not going to be an easy season for Sundowns because Pirates have what it takes to compete.”
