Bongokuhle Hlongwane continues to impress in MLS

Bafana Bafana striker Bongokuhle Hlongwane has continued to impress in the Major League Soccer [MLS], showcasing his goal-scoring prowess for his side, Minnesota United.

Hlongwane scored a goal for Minnesota United in their 3-1 victory over Njabulo Blom’s St Louis SC on Sunday morning. The win away from home propelled Minnesota United further up the league standings.

Meanwhile, Blom recently returned to his former club, Kaizer Chiefs, on a season-long loan after facing limited playing time at St Louis SC.

The 24-year-old found the back of the net in the 24th minute to level matters for his side. He scored a rebound from a close-range effort. St Louis had taken the lead as early as four minutes into the match.

In the 52nd minute, Minnesota went in front for the first time in the match through an own goal. The cross was intended for Hlongwane, who was in the box, and then the defender put the ball in his own net after pressure from Hlongwane.

Just after the hour mark, it was 3-1 as striker Kelvin Yeboah converted a penalty after a handball in the box.

The goal that Hlongwane scored against St Louis was his 10th in the league in 25 outings. Also, he has been grabbing some assists for his teammates, who have registered four so far.

The former Maritzburg United goal poacher has now scored two more than he did last campaign [eight goals].

Hlongwane is really pushing hard to get back in the national team. He’s been overlooked in the previous camps by coach Hugo Broos. Recently, the Belgian mentor has preferred strikers Lyle Foster and Iqraam Rayners.

The last time he represented the 1996 African champions was back in November 2023 against Rwanda in the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.
