Tinkler’s take on Mngqithi’s Sundowns post-Rulani Mokwena
Cape Town City head coach Eric Tinkler has shared his views on the performances of Mamelodi Sundowns, now led by Manqoba Mngqithi following Rulani Mokwena’s exit.
Mngqithi faced significant criticism due to poor displays in the MTN8, particularly in the quarterfinal against Polokwane City and the two-legged semifinal against Stellenbosch FC.
The Brazilians were eliminated from the competition, suffering a 2-0 aggregate defeat to Stellies.
Mngqithi’s decision to shift the team from Mokwena’s established tactics has been questioned as the Tshwane giants continue to adapt to a new playing style.
Tinkler made these remarks at Harry Gwala Stadium on Saturday afternoon after Cape Town City FC’s Betway Premiership opener against Royal AM, which ended in a 1-1 draw.
He sees no substantial change in Sundowns’ style of play this season. However, he believes that with Mngqithi having altered some of the personnel, the team will need time to develop cohesion and regain its strength.
TINKLER ON MANQOBA MNGQITHI’S MAMELODI SUNDOWNS – ‘I DON’T THINK HE’S CHANGED THAT’
“I still see them being a very pressing team,” said Tinkler.
“Coaches come with different ideas and different mentalities. But obviously, there are certain aspects of how they play, and you don’t want to change. And I don’t think he’s changed that, maybe personnel. And it’s about personnel gelling, getting a better understanding of each other.
“It doesn’t happen overnight, everybody…you sign five or six players, and tomorrow they are going to click? It doesn’t work that way; it takes time. What does he have there? He has an abundance of talent. Now, it’s just about finding the right combinations.
“And Rulani had that combination from how many years that he was there? So, it takes time.
“I don’t think it’s fair criticism [on Manqoba].”
Masandawana bounced back this weekend, beating Mbabane Swallows 4-0 in the first leg of the CAF Champions League second preliminary round. They meet again in the second leg on 21 September at Lucas Moripe Stadium.
