Aubrey Modiba on facing his former club
Mamelodi Sundowns star Aubrey Modiba has opened up about facing his former club, SuperSport United, in a Betway Premiership Tshwane Derby encounter on Tuesday evening.
Bafana Ba Style will welcome Matsatsantsa at Loftus Versfeld Stadium, with the kickoff set for 19:30.
This will be the opening league game for both sides in the inaugural 2024/25 Betway Premiership campaign.
Sundowns are currently the reigning champions of the SA elite league, having won it seven times in a row, and would be eager to continue with their momentum under the tutelage of Manqoba Mngqithi.
AUBREY MODIBA’S THOUGHTS ON TAKING ON SUPERSPORT UNITED
Bafana Bafana international Modiba acknowledged that it isn’t going to be a walk in the park facing his ex-team, given the demand that comes with a derby match.
He went on to reveal how the derby bragging rights are important, having represented both teams in the Tshwane Derby.
“We know Tshwane Derby is all about bragging rights, and it’s not going to be easy. I have managed to be on both sides,” said Modiba.
“When I was at SuperSport, I played against Sundowns, and I was always looking forward to that game because they are our rivals from the same area.
“It’s going to be a difficult one, but we are ready for the task. They haven’t played in a long time, but that doesn’t count because derbies are different and special. We are going to put up a fight and make sure we collect all the points.”
WHAT TO EXPECT FROM MAMELODI SUNDOWNS
Modiba noted that people can expect more goals in this game, as they struggled to score goals in their first three games.
However, he mentioned that they are relieved to have scored four goals against Mbabane Swallows in their first-leg of the CAF Champions League second preliminary round.
“What I like about derbies is goals every season, if I’m not mistaken. It shows the importance of the game and how much each team wants to win,” he added.
“It’s important for us to do well. We scored four goals in the Champions League as we struggled to score goals in our first three games.
“So, it was nice to see the guys on the scoresheet again. It gives the attackers confidence going into this game because when you score, you’re already looking forward to the next game so that you can try to score again.”
