Katsande – Long-standing dream Zimbabwe could achieve through Billiat’s return
Former Kaizer Chiefs and The Warriors midfielder Willard Katsande has spoken about how Khama Billiat returning to the Zimbabwean national team could help them achieve their long-held goal.
Billiat, who retired from international football in 2021, made a surprising comeback to the national team recently.
His presence has provided a significant boost to Zimbabwe’s squad, as evidenced by their recent performances against Kenya and Cameroon in the 2025 AFCON qualifiers.
Katsande stated that Billiat’s return to the national team was an immense boost for the country.
He believes the Yadah Stars FC forward can be instrumental in guiding Zimbabwe to the 2026 FIFA World Cup, particularly with the increased number of African qualifying spots available.
KATSANDE ON HOW ZIMBABWE CAN BENEFIT FROM BILLIAT
“Him coming back home [Zimbabwean league] and start scoring goals and going back to playing for the national team, it’s a plus for us as a country,” said Katsande.
“The numbers for [African teams] that qualify for the World Cup have been increased. Maybe this is our chance as Zimbabwe to qualify for the World Cup.
“He cannot be the same as 18 years [old], but for him being there, he’s going to inspire the younger ones who are going to take this team further.
“To know that I’m around Khama Billiat, who’s been celebrated. He’s back in the national team, he’s the leader and experienced and also to have those who are coming from overseas to know what African football is.
“For me, being back to the national team is a massive boost for us.”
Katsande was further asked whether Billiat should consider returning to the Betway Premiership.
He emphasised the importance of the 34-year-old attacker being in the Zimbabwean league. He believes that he can motivate younger players to strive for greatness.
‘BILLIAT IS THE FACE OF ZIMBABWEAN FOOTBALL’
“Coming back to the Betway Premiership, I feel like he has a job in our country to inspire the younger ones,” he added. “Let him take whatever decision he’s going to do, so be it.
“Maybe he can come on loan and go back, we don’t know. But he’s the face now for the Zimbabwean football, and you can see the game has been changing.
“He’s been pushing the younger ones. He’s scoring goals week in and week out, and the younger ones want to catch up with him.
“So, he’s the face of our Zimbabwean football.”
