Pirates issue major Paseko Mako injury update
Betway Premiership heavyweights Orlando Pirates have issued a major update regarding the injury status of their diminutive defender, Paseka Mako, as they gear up for their league opener.
Mako has been sidelined since October 2023 due to a knee ligament injury sustained while on international duty. The injury occurred shortly after making his debut for Bafana Bafana in a game against Eswatini.
As a result of the lengthy layoff, Mako missed 36 matches in all competitions for The Sea Robbers, including the Nedbank Cup final, which the club successfully defended last season following their win over Mamelodi Sundowns.
After undergoing treatment and rehabilitation for a knee injury, Mako has been declared fully fit to rejoin the squad.
The club confirmed that he resumed light training in August and has now successfully integrated back into full team sessions.
PIRATES WELCOME BACK MAKO FROM INJURY
Mako’s return provides coach Jose Riveiro with additional options at left-back. The Spaniard has often deployed Deon Hotto, a natural attacker, in the position. Captain Innocent Maela has also been used as a substitute in certain matches.
In an interview with the club’s media department, Mako expressed his delight at fully recovering from the setback. He emphasised the challenging journey but expressed his eagerness to contribute to the team’s success once again.
“I’m so excited to be back on the field. The journey wasn’t easy but I’m eager to rejoin the team and contribute to the team’s success,” said Mako.
“It’s time to push myself; I’m ready to give my all again. Thanks to everyone who encouraged and supported me during my recovery.”
Other Pirates players that are edging closer to full recovery include the duo of Thapelo Xoki and Bandile Shandu. Then Thabiso Lebitso and Goodman Mosele are still on the sidelines recovering from injuries.
The Soweto giants will begin their 2024/25 Betway Premiership against Chippa United on Wednesday evening. Kickoff at Orlando Stadium is set for set for 7:30PM.
