Manqoba Mngqithi addresses Oswin Appollis interest, latest on Chiefs’ pursuit

Mamelodi Sundowns coach Manqoba Mngqithi has addressed talk linking his club to Polokwane City FC’s highly-rated winger, Oswin Appollis.

The player has also been on the radar of Soweto giants Kaizer Chiefs, further intensifying the transfer saga.

The 23-year-old winger was in fine form when Bafana Bafana played Uganda and South Sudan in the 2025 AFCON. Appollis picked up the man-of-the-match against The Cranes and scored a brace away in South Sudan.

In the 2023/24 season, his first at the Limpopo outfit, he scored seven goals and provided five assists in 32 outings in all competitions.

WHAT MANQOBA MNGQITHI SAID ABOUT OSWIN APPOLLIS

Mngqithi, known for his candid approach, admitted his admiration for Appollis’ talent but conceded that a transfer seems unlikely at this stage.

“I would love to get any top player,” Mngqithi told journalists. “Appollis is one of the players I like, but I think as many coaches would say the same thing. You’ll not always get what you want in life.”

The Sundowns coach revealed that Polokwane City’s determination to retain Appollis has been a major stumbling block. “We already have around 40 players but it will be important to get a player like that if any opportunity avails itself. But I don’t think it will avail itself because I know Esperance were interested in him, but they could not get hold of him.”

LATEST ON KAIZER CHIEFS’ INTEREST IN OSWIN APPOLLIS

Mngqithi’s comments echo the sentiments expressed by Polokwane City FC, who have made it clear that they intend to keep Appollis to bolster their ambitions of securing a CAF Confederation Cup spot.

The club finished 8th last season and will need a top-four finish to qualify for the continental competition.

Chiefs, who were also reportedly keen on Appollis, have seemingly cooled their interest in light of Polokwane City’s stance.

The Glamour Boys are now believed to be exploring alternative options to strengthen their squad.

Amakhosi have tried prizing the nippy winger from Rise & Shine but have hit a brick wall.

Mngqithi concluded on a pragmatic note, suggesting that while they remain admirers of the South African international, they are realistic about their challenges of securing his signature. “So, I wouldn’t want to talk much about something that, at this stage, is immaterial.”

For now, it appears that the talented winger will remain at Polokwane City, at least for the foreseeable future.
