Kutumela reveals contributing factors to unsuccessful spell at CT City

Richards Bay FC attacker Thabiso Kutumela has revelead contributing factors to his unsuccessful spell at Cape Town City last season.

The Limpopo-born striker spent the 2023/24 Betway Premiership season on a season-long loan at City from Mamelodi Sundowns.

This was after Kutumela struggled to break into the starting line-up at Sundowns since signing from Maritzburg United [now known as Durban City FC] in 2021.

Kutumela made 38 appearances across all competitions, scoring five goals and providing six assists in two seasons at Downs.

Following his struggles with game-time at Sundowns, the 31-year-old reunited with Eric Tinkler at City with an aim of bringing his career back on track. Tinkler and Kutumela worked together at Maritzburg between 2019 and 2020.

Kutumela only managed to score three goals in his 28 games in all competitions at Cape Town City. Last season, Khanyisa Mayo was the reliable goal-scorer for the club after netting 11 goals in all competitions.

The Bafana Bafana international has since left City for a high-profile move to Algerian club CR Belouizdad a few weeks ago.

After Kutumela completed a move to Bay in the current transfer window, the forward says arriving late in City’s pre-season affected him in the previous campaign.

“At Cape Town City, everything was okay; it’s just that I didn’t have a pre-season with them, and things were difficult for me because if I had a pre-season with them, I would have picked up the pace,” Kutumela told FARPost.

“Even the formation they are playing at Cape Town City is different from the formation we played with Eric at Maritzburg United.

“So I also had to change the position I was playing. I usually play as number 10, but at City, I was playing more as an eight. If I had pre-season, it would have been easy to adapt to the new position, but scoring three goals in all competitions was not enough.”
