Majoro reveals Khune’s crucial role in post-AmaZulu struggles

Former Kaizer Chiefs striker Lehlohonolo Majoro has opened up about the vital role that veteran goalkeeper Itumeleng Khune played in helping him navigate a difficult period following his departure from AmaZulu FC.

Majoro has been without a club since 2023 when his contract with Betway Premiership side AmaZulu FC expired. Parting ways with Usuthu marked a significant turning point in his career, leaving him facing uncertainty.

Almost two years later, his close friend Itumeleng Khune, an iconic figure in South African football, finds himself in a similar predicament. Khune’s lengthy tenure at Chiefs came to an end in June 2024.

Despite the club’s initial plans for him to transition into an ambassadorial role, Khune expressed a desire to continue playing.

However, the former Bafana Bafana number one goalkeeper’s off-field issues, including an incident involving alcohol, cast a shadow over his future. Chiefs’ marketing director Jessica Motaung recently confirmed that Khune’s playing days at the club are over. Despite this, Khune remains determined to showcase his abilities on the field and has reportedly not made a decision on the club’s offer of an ambassadorial position.

Majoro and Khune share a deep-rooted bond forged during their time as teammates at Amakhosi. Their relationship has endured far beyond their playing days, with Khune proving to be a steadfast friend and supporter.

When Majoro faced the challenges of unemployment after his contract with AmaZulu FC expired, Khune was there to offer unwavering support.

Majoro, who has experienced his fair share of career ups and downs in his football career, revealed that Khune’s unwavering support and friendship were instrumental in his recovery from a difficult period.

“One of the reasons that I managed to overcome this phase of me moving away from AmaZulu is thanks to him [Itumeleng Khune] and his wife,” Majoro told FARPost.

“He made sure I was mentally taken care of, and we were spending time together. We spent time taking our minds off football. If I have to be there for him, I will forever do that.”
