CT Spurs give Velebayi big role after failed Chiefs move
Motsepe Foundation Championship side Cape Town Spurs has given Asanele Velebayi a big role at the club following a failed transfer move to Kaizer Chiefs.
Velebayi was one of the most sought after players in the recently-closed transfer after producing impressive performances in the previous Betway Premiership season.
The attacking midfielder spent one season in the Premiership with Spurs after gaining promotion from the NFD in the 2023/24 campaign.
Velebayi featured in 24 matches across all competitions for The Urban Warriors, scored one goal and provided one assist. The talented winger proved his worth with his pace and skill to go past defenders.
The SA junior international attracted interest from Kaizer Chiefs; however, the move could not materialise as the club failed to agree on a transfer fee.
CAPE TOWN SPURS APPOINT ASANELE VELEBAYI AS THE CLUB CAPTAIN
With Velebayi remaining with Spurs beyond the 2024/25 season, the Cape Town-based outfit has appointed the 21-year-old as a captain.
This comes after Chumani Butsaka, who was the captain at the club, joined Stellenbosch FC in the Betway Premiership a few days ago.
“Coach Ernst Middendorp’s decision to appoint Asanele Velebayi as the club captain is an indication of the trust he has in him as the player and person. We wish Asanele much success.” Spurs revealed in a statement.
Meanwhile, Spurs have sold Rushwin Dortley to Amakhosi in the off-season as the Soweto giants beefed up their defence under the guidance of new coach Nasreddine Nabi.
The highly-rated centre-back registered 28 matches in all competitions for Spurs in the previous season which earned him a move to Chiefs.
Dortley recently broke into the Hugo Broos’ Bafana Bafana squad and he featured in two 2025 AFCON qualifiers games against Uganda and South Sudan early this month.
Additionally, Spurs also sold striker Ashley Cupido to Stellies. Cupido is seen as a perfect replacement for Iqraam Rayners, who joined Mamelodi Sundowns in the off-season.
