Sundowns book CAF Champions League group stage spot

Mamelodi Sundowns are through to the CAF Champions League group stages after a convincing 4-0 win against Mbabane Swallows in the second-leg of the second preliminary round at the  Lucas Moripe Stadium on Saturday night.

Kobamelo Kodisang, Thembinkosi Lorch, Sphelele Mkhulise and Malibongwe Khoza netted the goals for Sundowns, who won the tie 8-0 on aggregate.

The hosts came into the match leading 4-0 on aggregate after the first-leg away from home last week.

Sundowns made 10 changes to the team that beat SuperSport United 2-0 in the Betway Premiership on Tuesday. They were also missing players such as Terrence Mashego, Neo Maema and Arthur Sales due to injuries.

Bafana Bafana internationals Teboho Mokoena and Khuliso Mudau were once again dropped from the team for a third successive match.

Kobamelo Kodisang was the first to open the scoring with a tap-in from close range after a neat cross from Thembinkosi Lorch. The Brazilians went into the half-time break leading 1-0.

Peter Shalulile, who was the only player retained from the team that beat SuperSport United, came close early in the second-half. But his shot missed the target by inches.

Sundowns were rewarded with a second goal for their dominance. Young defender Malibongwe Khoza scored his first for the club and the second on the night with a header from a Lorch cross in the 60th minute.

Three minutes later, Lorch was on the scoresheet after capitalising on a cross by Kodisang. Four minutes later, Sphelele Mkhulise scored the fourth for the home side to make it 8-0 on aggregate.

Kegan Johannes also made his official debut for Masandawana after joining from neighbours SuperSport United.

Sundowns are joined by Orlando Pirates, who are also through to the Champions League group stage after beating Jwaneng Galaxy of Botswana.
