Bongokuhle Hlongwane on target as he clocks 100 games for Minnesota United

Bongokuhle Hlongwane keeps knocking on Hugo Broos’ Bafana Bafana with fine performances in the Major League Soccer [MSL] in the USA, where he has clocked 100 games for Minnesota United.

Hlongwane has been in blistering form for his side, Minnesota United.

The former Maritzburg United forward scored a last-gasp goal to cement Minnesota United’s win against Sporting KC in the league.

They won 2-0 in a match played at Children’s Mercy Park on Sunday Morning. Kelvin Yeboah opened the scoring after 65 minutes with a neat curling effort from the edge of the box.

For a moment, Minnesota United appeared content with the solitary away goal. But Hlongwane was there to poke the ball home from close range as the match wrapped up.

His speed and tact are increasingly becoming difficult for defenders in Major League Soccer to deal with.

HLONGWANE’S IMPRESSIVE STATS FOR MINNESOTA UNITED

This was his 11th goal of the season, as he kept pole position in the club’s goal charts. In addition, Hlongwane has contributed four assists in 28 matches this term. In his 100 appearances for the club, he scored 30 goals and registered 14 assists.

This season, Tami Oluwaseyi is his closest rival in terms of goals, with eight goals under his belt. Robin Lod is third on the goal charts with six goals.

Moreover, the speedy South African winger was on target again last week when they beat Njabulo Blom‘s team, St Louis City FC.

The 24-year-old continues to give a good account for himself, something that is music to Broos’ ears.

The speedy winger has been overlooked from Hugo Broos’ Bafana Bafana in recent times. But how he has been hitting the target in the MLS is now hard to ignore.

His inclusion will undoubtedly bolster Bafana Bafana, who have been pushed hard to qualify for the 2025 AFCON and the 2026 World Cup.

And with the next 2025 AFCON qualifiers slated for next month, it will not be surprising to see Hlongwane receiving a call-up.

Bafana Bafana are set to take on Congo in back-to-back Group K matches on the 7th and 15th of October, respectively.
