Ofori’s AmaZulu debut: Will Chiefs clash be too soon?

Ghanaian goalkeeper Richard Ofori is poised to join AmaZulu FC after his departure from Orlando Pirates in June.

This marks a new chapter for the 30-year-old, who faced limited playing time under coach Jose Riveiro last season.

But will the Ghanaian shot-stopper be ready to play against Kaizer Chiefs on Wednesday night?

Ofori arrived in Durban over the weekend and completed his medical on Monday. He’s expected to sign a short-term deal and start training after the midweek clash with Chiefs in Durban. The development means he’ll miss that game.

Usuthu play host to Amakhosi at the Moses Mabhida Stadium. Kick-off is 19h30.

WHY AMAZULU FC SOUGHT RICHARD OFORI’S EXPERTISE

AmaZulu’s decision to sign Ofori is driven by their need to strengthen their goalkeeping department with experience. Current keeper Veli Mothwa has had a difficult start to the season, with errors affecting both Bafana Bafana and AmaZulu’s performance.

Ofori’s arrival would bring a wealth of experience and proven ability to AmaZulu. His track record of solid performances and leadership qualities are expected to provide stability to the team’s defence.

With this new signing, AmaZulu aims to address their early-season challenges and build a stronger foundation for future success.

This move signifies a fresh start for Ofori, who will undoubtedly be eager to regain his form and contribute to AmaZulu’s ambitions.

Once a reliable presence in goal, Ofori’s appearances dwindled to just three in the 2023/24 campaign. Despite this, his contributions during his time with the Buccaneers were significant. Joining in 2020, he quickly established himself as a key player, making 58 appearances and securing 29 clean sheets.

Ofori’s journey in South African football began with Maritzburg United, where he made 96 appearances. He has also represented the Ghana national team, earning 33 caps. He was Ghana’s vice-captain at the 2023 AFCON finals in Ivory Coast.
