Mngqithi confirms Abubeker Nassir’s move to SuperSport United

Mamelodi Sundowns head coach Manqoba Mngqithi has confirmed Abubeker Nassir’s switch to their crosstown rivals, SuperSport United.

Mngqithi was speaking after the match against Marumo Gallants on Tuesday where Masandawana came out 4-1 victorious.

After the match, the Sundowns coach was asked about the Ethiopian winger, who had been facing uncertainty regarding his future at the club ahead of this season.

Mngqithi revealed that Nassir moved to their neighbours SuperSport. However, he did not specify whether the transfer is on a loan basis or permanent.

“Nassir is not at Sundowns at the moment, but I think he is at SuperSport,” Mngqithi confirmed to the journalists.

The 24-year-old has been in the books of the Brazilians since January 2022 after signing from Ethiopian Coffee Sports Club.

He was part of the Ethiopian national team squad that participated in the Africa Cup of Nations that was held in Cameroon that same year.

Despite signing in the middle of the 2021/22 campaign, he only joined the Tshwane giants at the start of the 2022/23 season, where he made a promising impression. He scored in a big match against Kaizer Chiefs in a 4-0 win for Sundowns.

Unfortunately, Nassir suffered a career-threatening injury in a match against Orlando Pirates midway through his debut season at Sundowns.

His recovery was challenging, leading to considerable time away from the field, ultimately resulting in the utilisation of his foreign player slot.

NASSIR WAS WITH SUNDOWNS IN AUSTRIA FOR PRE-SEASON CAMP

The Walia Antelopes star was training with the league champions during the pre-season. He was also part of the team that went to Austria for a pre-season, where they played friendly games in preparation for this season.

Nevertheless, he was not registered for this season, and the foreign quota challenge also became a factor behind his exit.

Since joining the club, Nassir has netted four goals in the 17 matches he has played across all competitions.
