Stellenbosch FC defeat CT City in Cape derby, Chippa and Sekhukhune share spoils
Stellenbosch FC bagged the bragging rights in the Cape Derby after defeating Cape Town City 3-0 on Wednesday night at Athlone Stadium.
The Winelands-based side came into this match looking to bounce back from their disappointing 2-0 defeat against Golden Arrows last Wednesday.
In the past few encounters between Stellenbosch and CT City, the Steve Barker-coached team has been dominating after winning the last three matches in the Betway Premiership.
Stellies had a promising start to the match, creating more goal-scoring chances. However, they couldn’t find the back of the net in the opening minutes.
The Maroons eventually found the back of the net on the stroke of half-time through Andre De Jong. In the second-half, Stellenbosch doubled their lead with a goal from Fawaaz Basadien, who scored in the 54th minute from his own half.
Stellenbosch opened the floodgates and took the scoreline to 3-0, thanks to a goal by new signing Sanele Barns. The attacking midfielder joined Stellenbosch from Richards Bay FC in the off-season.
CHIPPA UNITED PLAY TO A 1-1 DRAW AGAINST SEKHUKHUNE UNITED
Elsewhere, Chippa United shared the spoils with Sekhukhune United after playing to a 1-1 draw at the Peter Mokaba Stadium in Polokwane.
In their previous match, The Chilli Boys beat Richards Bay with a slender 1-0 victory at Buffalo City Stadium last Saturday. Chippa began the new season with a 2-1 defeat against The Buccaneers two weeks ago at Orlando Stadium.
In another Premiership match on Wednesday, SuperSport United collected maximum points after walking away with a 1-0 win over TS Galaxy. Matsatsantsa’s solitary goal came in the 63rd minute, courtesy of Terrence Dzvukamanja.
Meanwhile, Betway Premiership newcomer Magesi FC scored a last-minute goal against Golden Arrows at the Mpumalanga Stadium in KZN. However, the match was abandoned due to a power outage at the stadium.
Magesi gained automatic promotion to the SA’s top-flight at the start of the 2024/25 season from the Motsepe Foundation Championship.
