Nabi hails Sirino’s impact, addresses Ox Mthethwa’s situation

Kaizer Chiefs coach Nasreddine Nabi has expressed his satisfaction with the immediate impact of new signing Gaston Sirino, while also clarifying the situation surrounding Sibongiseni ‘Ox’ Mthethwa’s lack of playing time.

Sirino, who joined Chiefs on a free transfer after being released by Mamelodi Sundowns, has quickly become a key figure for the team. The Uruguayan midfielder has already contributed two assists and a goal in his first two appearances.

Nabi was effusive in his praise for Sirino, highlighting his positive influence on the team’s young talents like Mduduzi Shabalala, Wandile Duba, and Samkelo Zwane. “We’re very happy about Sirino and what he’s brought to the team,” Nabi told journalists after Chiefs’ 3-1 win over AmaZulu FC.

“He’s a great role model for them and he brings a lot of positive impact on the youngsters.”

The coach further emphasised Gaston Sirino’s all-around contribution. “He’s a good addition, and he also comes back to help defensively. He’s the kind of player we need. I did say I want top-quality players like Sirino.”

Sirino’s impact was also evident in Chiefs’ opening match against Marumo Gallants, where his presence helped create opportunities for Shabalala and Vilakazi to score in a 2-1 victory.

WHAT NASREDDINE NABI SAID ABOUT OX MTHETHWA’S SITUATION

Addressing the absence of Mthethwa, who is yet to feature in the opening two matches, Nabi assured that the midfielder remains part of his plans. “We have 32 players, and I’ve got respect for all of them,” he said. “Mthethwa has particular [good] qualities, and maybe he could start against Sundowns [on Saturday].”

However, Nabi acknowledged the challenge of preparing for the Sundowns clash with limited time. “I’d have loved to have more time to prepare the team tactically because the approach is different from AmaZulu,” he explained.

Despite the tight schedule, Nabi remains confident in his team’s ability to compete against the reigning champions. “We will give it 200% effort. We’re Kaizer Chiefs. Sundowns is one of the greatest teams on the continent. We respect them. But we play at home.”
