Saint Eloi Lupopo appoint Luc Eymael as head coach

Six-time DR Congo champions Saint Eloi Lupopo have appointed former Free State Stars and Polokwane City FC coach Luc Eymael as their new head coach.

Eymael was recently in charge at another DR Congo side, Aigles du Congo.

The Belgian finished fourth during the playoffs in DR Congo and missed out on qualification for the CAF Confederation Cup. He was hailed for transforming a team that had only been formed last year into a competitive side.

He has not been attached to any club since parting ways with the side.

Lupopo were recently eliminated in the second preliminary round of the CAF Confederation Cup. This resulted in the club sacking Malina coach Mohamed Magassouba. They have roped in the 65-year-old former Black Leopards coach on a two-year contract.

WHAT LUC EYMAEL WANTS TO ACHIEVE AFTER SECURING NEW COACHING JOB

“I want to qualify the team for Africa, for the Champions League or the Confederation Cup again,” he told FARPost about his ambitions at the club.

“If I do qualify them, I would want to enter the group stages. I had already spoken to the chairman in June, but he wanted to continue with the coach. He wanted to give him one year, but he told me that he didn’t want to renew his contract.

The chairman called me on Tuesday, and on Wednesday, we concluded the deal. So I want to enter the group stages in the next season, first to qualify and then to enter the group stages, and I want to do all the best with the players.

“I am sure the Chairman would like the best for his team, and that’s what we will try to do. But we will need to increase the professionalism, and that’s what we will do.”
