AmaZulu confirm Pablo Franco Martin exit after disastrous start

AmaZulu Football Club have confirmed the exit of head coach Pablo Franco Martin following a dismal start to the 2024/25 Betway Premiership season.

The Spaniard’s tenure at Usuthu comes to an end after a string of poor results that sees the club languishing at the bottom of the league table.

The writing was on the wall for Martin after AmaZulu suffered three consecutive defeats in their opening three matches.

The Durban-based side was first edged out 2-1 by Polokwane City FC on the opening day before being comprehensively beaten 3-1 by Kaizer Chiefs at their home ground, Moses Mabhida Stadium. A 1-0 loss to Marumo Gallants over the weekend proved the final straw, sealing Martin’s fate.

The early season results take his tally to 12 wins, 12 draws and 15 losses in his 39 games in charge of Usuthu.

In a statement, the club said: “AmaZulu has decided to part ways with head coach Pablo Franco Martin and assistant coach Aitor Van Den Brule.

“We would like to take this opportunity to express our gratitude to both Martin and Aitor Van Den Brule for their contributions during the last 15 months at the helm of the team. Their dedication and hard work have not gone unnoticed, and we appreciate all the effort they have put into the roles. We wish them the best in their future endeavours and extend our warmest regards as they move forward in the curious.”

This disappointing start to the season starkly contrasts the club’s ambitions. AmaZulu, under the ownership of Sandile Zungu, have been vocal about their desire to challenge for silverware and establish themselves as a dominant force in South African football. The early season slump clearly did not align with these aspirations, leading to the decision to make a change in leadership.
