Sammy Seabi in advanced talks to rejoin Polokwane City FC
Former Mamelodi Sundowns midfielder Sammy Seabi is in advanced talks to rejoin Polokwane City FC on a free transfer for the 2024/25 Betway Premiership season.
Seabi parted ways with the Brazilians over a week ago after struggling to break into the club’s starting line-up. The holding midfielder joined Sundowns from Polokwane City in 2019 under the then-head coach Pitso Mosimane at the Tshwane giants.
However, due to the intense competition within Sundowns’ star-studded squad, Seabi was loaned out to various clubs to gain valuable playing experience. He spent stints on loan at Chippa United, Moroka Swallows, and Sekhukhune United, as at Sundowns, he faced challenges in securing consistent playing time.
In the 2023/24 season, Seabi was brought back to Sundowns with the intention of vying for a regular starting spot under then-coach Rulani Mokwena. But, he once again encountered fierce competition from established midfielders such as Teboho Mokoena, Bathusi Aubaas, Rivaldo Coetzee, Sphelele Mkhulise, Bongani Zungu, and Marcelo Allende.
The 29-year-old made only four appearances in all competitions when Downs won their seventh successive league title and the inaugural African Football League [AFL] last campaign.
SAMMY SEABI, TRAINING WITH POLOKWANE CITY, LOOKS SET TO SIGN A DEAL
Following his exit from Masandawana, the experienced midfielder has been on the radar of Betway Premiership newcomers Magesi FC, Chippa United, and Polokwane City.
FARPost has learnt that Polokwane City is close to finalising a deal for the Limpopo-born star who will join the club for his second stint.
“Sammy Seabi is training with Polokwane City as we speak, and the club is happy with him because he’s a familiar face at the club,” a source close to the club told FARPost.
“I can tell you that he’s going to be signed in the coming days and work with the club during the upcoming FIFA international break to be ready to compete again.
“So clubs like Chippa United and Magesi have shown interest in Seabi but I think Polokwane City are the ones that are pushing hard for his signature.”
Seabi will be crucial for Rise and Shine as they fight to emulate their form from last season, which saw them finish in the top eight on the log standings.
