Samir Nurkovic set to join SuperSport after improved offer
Former TS Galaxy and Kaizer Chiefs striker Samir Nurkovic is on the brink of joining SuperSport United on a one-year deal with an option for another year.
The move comes after SuperSport tabled an improved offer that has seemingly swayed the Serbian forward.
Nurković, who surprisingly parted ways with Galaxy at the end of last season, has been a highly sought-after free agent.
He first made a name for himself in South Africa with Kaizer Chiefs in 2019. His impressive goal-scoring record, particularly his 14 goals and six assists in 31 matches during his first season at Amakhosi, made him a target for several clubs.
However, due to a series of layoffs at the Soweto giants, Nurković’s performance declined. After three seasons with the Chiefs, he moved on and joined Royal AM.
His stay at Royal AM did not last long and was marred by off-field issues. Nurković found his goal-scoring boots at Galaxy last campaign, netting 10 goals. But he left the Rockets by mutual agreement.
NURKOVIĆ HEADING TO SUPERSPORT
As a free agent, Nurković had no shortage of suitors, both in SA and abroad. However, he ultimately chose to join SuperSport.
While SuperSport’s initial offer was not to Nurković’s liking, the club eventually managed to secure his signature by improving their terms.
SuperSport have been eager to strengthen their attacking options, especially in light of Bradley Grobler’s injury. The club’s head coach, Gavin Hunt, recently expressed his desire to sign Nurković, stating that they were ‘in a hurry’ to acquire the Serbian forward.
To address their immediate needs up front, Matsatsantsa signed rising Zimbabwean football star Nokutenda Mangezi, who was thrown into action just days after his arrival.
However, according to FARPost sources, “SuperSport really wanted an experienced striker, and Samir was available, so they saw it fit to improve their offer as Hunt needs him. With Grobler out, they desperately wanted a striker to replace him and Samir was that player as he has the experience in the PSL.
“Samir will sign for SuperSport in the next few days. The one-year contract, which has an option to extend by a further year, will expire in 2026.”
The insider added: “SuperSport are also working on registering Samir as a local as he now qualifies to be a naturalised South African due to the fact that he has been in the country for five years. It looks like SuperSport wants to make more room for foreign spots ahead of the January transfer window.”
