Broos names Bafana’s final squad to face Congo in AFCON qualifiers

Bafana Bafana head coach Hugo Broos has named his final squad for the 2025 AFCON qualifiers against Congo Brazzaville this month.

The final 23-man squad announcement took place at the SABC television studios in Auckland Park on Thursday, 3 October 2024.

Broos’ charges will face Congo in back-to-back matches in the CAF 2025 AFCON qualifiers in the upcoming international FIFA break.

South Africa will first battle out with the Congolese nation in Gqeberha, Eastern Cape, on Friday, 11 October 2024. The kick-off is scheduled for 19:00.

Bafana will then jet off to Congo to play the return game on Tuesday, 15 October 2024.

South Africa are in Group K alongside Congo, South Sudan, and Uganda in the AFCON qualifiers.

The two top nations from the group will qualify for the 2025 AFCON tournament due to be held in Morocco. The tournament is set to start from 21 December 2025 to 18 January 2026.

THE NINE PLAYERS THAT HAVE BEEN LEFT OUT BY COACH HUGO BROOS FROM HIS FINAL SQUAD

Coach Broos announced his 32-member preliminary squad for the AFCON qualifiers a week ago. Today, the Belgian coach trimmed it to 23.

The nine players who have been left out of Broos’ final squad are Veli Mothwa, Bradley Cross, Siyabonga Ngezana, Bathusi Aubaas, Sinoxolo Kwayiba, Tshegofatso Mabasa, Mihlali Mayambela, Percy Tau, and Devin Titus,

As things stand, South Africa are placed second in Group K with four points after two games. They are equal on points with log leaders Uganda. Bafana will be hoping to collect all six points against Congo to increase their chances of qualifying for the AFCON tournament.
