‘Hopefully I will win the goal of the season’ – Fawaaz Basadien
Stellenbosch FC defender Fawaaz Basadien has opened up about his recent wonder goal during a league match. The strike has him in contention for the Goal of the Season award.
Basadien has been in fine form for Stellies and was strongly linked with a move to Kaizer Chiefs before the transfer window deadline on 20 September.
The 27-year-old has also been part of the Hugo Broos Bafana Bafana squad in recent times due to his impressive performances at club level.
Basadien recently scored a stunning goal during Stellenbosch’s 3-0 win against Cape Town City FC from his own half in the Betway Premiership.
He picked up the ball in his own half at the Athlone Stadium and ran for a few metres before unleashing a shot that went past CT City goalie Darren Keet. This is despite Keer managing to get a hand on the ball.
A debate has already started on whether there can be a match on Basadien’s goal for the remainder of the season.
Speaking ahead of the MTN8 final against Orlando Pirates at Moses Mabhida Stadium on Saturday, the defender explained what was going through his mind moments before he took the shot.

“I did mean it [to take a shot]. But in that moment I was looking to find Devin Titus. But once I saw they fouled Titus, and he fell, I knew I didn’t have options in front of me,” he said.
“I just looked up, and I saw Keet was struggling to get back a bit, and I just hit. As soon as hit I could feel that I got it well enough and this is a goal.”

“To be honest, I didn’t really check all the [congratulatory] messages. There is still quite a few messages that I got. But people were just saying that is the goal of the season. Most of them were saying it’s a goal of the season. Hopefully, I will win the Goal of the Season. But we will see.”
