‘Nobody will pay €5 million [R97 million] for Teboho Mokoena’: Hugo Broos

Bafana Bafana head coach Hugo Broos has questioned the €5 million [R97 million] valuation reportedly placed on Mamelodi Sundowns midfielder Teboho Mokoena.

Despite Mokoena’s impressive performances at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations [AFCON] in Ivory Coast, Broos believes that the midfielder was overpriced.

Interestingly, Lance Davids, Mokoena’s agent, recently revealed to Metro FM Sport that Sundowns’ €5 million [R97 million] valuation of the player prevented his transfer to Europe.

Mokoena’s stock rose significantly after his stellar display at AFCON, where he helped Bafana secure a bronze medal finish. His performances attracted interest from overseas clubs, but Sundowns recently tied him down to a new five-year contract.

However, Broos has suggested that Mokoena’s market value is inflated, suggesting that such a hefty price tag is unlikely to attract buyers abroad for a player in SA. According to Transfermarkt, the former SuperSport United midfielder Mokoena has a current market value of €2.4 million [R46 million].

BROOS QUESTIONS MOKOENA’S €5 MILLION VALUATION

“Mokoena played a very good AFCON; there was interest [from overseas],” said Broos after announcing his 23-man squad for this month’s 2025 AFCON qualifiers against Congo.

“But then now, if it is true they [Sundowns] asked for €5 million for him, nobody, nobody will pay €5 million for Mokoena, nobody, why? Because he is only … excuse me that I’m expressing myself like this, he is only a South African footballer.

“We don’t have any history of South African footballers playing abroad for a long time now,” added Broos. “You see, in other countries, such as Senegal, Morocco, and Ivory Coast, they all have players abroad, but we don’t anymore, so we need this. We can achieve that by having good results with the national team because you see what happens after AFCON, suddenly there was interest, but we are on a good way, but we are still not there where we want to be,” added Broos.

Mokoena remains committed to his European dream despite recently extending his contract with Sundowns. With the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup on the horizon, the Bafana midfielder sees it as the perfect opportunity to showcase his abilities and potentially attract interest from European clubs.
