Broos on why he chose Sesane over other considered defenders
Bafana Bafana head coach Hugo Broos has revealed why he chose Orlando Pirates centre-back Thabiso Sesane among other defenders who were considered to replace the injured Siyabonga Ngezana.
Ngezana has been significantly missed by his club in recent matches. His last appearance for The Reds and Blues was at the beginning of September, prior to the FIFA international break.
As previously reported, FCSB announced last week that Ngezana suffered an injury and was expected to be sidelined for approximately one month.
Although Ngezana was part of the preliminary squad for the upcoming 2025 AFCON qualifiers against Congo, Broos ultimately had to exclude him from the final selection.
The Belgian coach explained that he chose Sesane due to his consistent appearances with Pirates since the start of the season.
He also expressed confidence in the 24-year-old’s ability to meet the standards required for a place in the national team.
HUGO BROOS EXPLAINS THE SELECTION OF THABISO SESANE
“For the moment, I think Stellenbosch and Pirates are the two teams who are playing best football,” said Broos.
“That means that the players who are playing in those teams are good players or play good also.
“So, when we had to replace Ngezana, we were looking at other players, Sesane and a few others.
“We decided to take him because he played all games with Pirates since at the beginning of the season.
“So, he plays good, he’s a good defender. He’s also good in the building.
“So, that means that after the discussion with my friend Helman [Mkhalele], we decided to take him and I think it was the best choice to replace Ngezana at the moment.”
Sesane has secured a consistent starting role at Pirates under the management of Jose Riveiro. The young centre-back has played all 10 matches that the Sea Robbers have played in this campaign.
