Thabang Monare explains Linda Mlambo’s impact on his Sekhukhune move
Sekhukhune United midfielder Thabang Monare has explained the influence of the club’s captain, Linda Mlambo, in his decision to join Babina Noko before the start of the new Betway Premiership season.
Monare signed for the Limpopo outfit at the beginning of the 2024/25 term, joining the side as a free agent following his departure from Orlando Pirates, where his contract was not renewed.
Despite being part of the Bafana Bafana squad regularly, the 35-year-old struggled for game time at the ‘Sea Robbers’ under the tutelage of Spanish mentor Jose Riveiro.
In the last term at Pirates, the player played in only 11 matches, all of which were league clashes.
THE ROLE PLAYED BY LINDA MLAMBO IN ATTRACTING THABANG MONARE TO SEKHUKHUNE UNITED
In an interview with FARPost, Monare stated that he used to have random calls with Mlambo while he was still at Pirates, and they would discuss how things were going in their respective clubs. That’s how he noticed how ambitious Sekhukhune is. When the club approached him, he did not think twice because he knew how the club operated.
He went on to note that his friendship with Mlambo also played a role in convincing him to sign with Sekhukhune.
“Like I said before, Linda is my friend, so we would talk about how things were going in our teams, even when I was still at Orlando Pirates. That’s when you get to understand that the club is very ambitious,” Monare told this publication.
“Also, the club wants to be up there, and that’s something that aligns with my goals as a football player and my work ethic. That’s where I want to be in the future.
“I’m very happy where I am right now. The brand of the club and the ambitions that they have are something I want to be part of. We are looking for a brand that wants to go forward. The players that they have attracted before me are one thing that I loved.”
THABANG MONARE ON HIS REUNION WITH LINDA MLAMBO
Monare also expressed his delight at his reunion with Mlambo, whom he played with at Jomo Cosmos and the Buccaneers.
“It’s fantastic, you know, meeting my skipper. It’s baffling because I was actually his captain at Jomo Cosmos. That shows how life in football changes,” he added.
“So, it’s great; I mean, it’s like we never left because we spent a lot of time together. That’s why it was really nice reuniting with someone I call a friend.”
