Brandon Petersen opens up on working with goalkeeper coach IIyes Mzoughi

Kaizer Chiefs shot-stopper Brandon Petersen has opened up about working with the club’s new and energetic goalkeeper coach, Ilyes Mzoughi.

Mzoughi joined Chiefs ahead of the 2024/25 Betway Premiership after he was roped in by Tunisian mentor Nasreddine Nabi.

Other technical team members include assistant coach Khalil Ben Youssef and strength and conditioning coach Safi Majdi. Another assistant coach, Fernando Da Cruz, left his post after an offer from the Moroccan Football Federation.

Mzoughi replaced Rainer Dinkelacker after his contract with the Soweto giants ended last season.

Apart from Petersen, Mzoughi is also working with Fiacre Ntwari, Bruce Bvuma and Bontle Molefi. Petersen will be aiming to fight for the number one position after the international break. This is after he recovered from a finger injury and has been cleared to start full training.

Mzoughi is a passionate person who supports the team during matches. In the league opener against Marumo Gallants, when Mfundo Vilakazi scored a goal to hand Amakhosi a 2-1 lead, Mzoughi ran to the corner flag to celebrate with the players.

Petersen says Mzoughi has brought some positive energy to the goalkeeping department, and all the goalies have been growing and improving.

“He brings that energy that a lot of goalkeepers have. But sometimes you don’t want to show it because we know they say goalkeepers are crazy,” said Petersen.

“He’s that one guy who has passion; you can see him through his work even if he’s speaking and the way he trains us.

“I think it’s the positive energy. That’s what he has brought to the goalkeeping department. Ilyes’ passion makes you to do your best, knowing he’s always backing you and supporting you.

“We’ve been growing [as goalkeepers], [Mzoughi’s training] its something new for us, we are now accustomed to his work. For me, it’s been good, I’m looking forward to working with him.
