Magesi chairman holds firm on Clinton Larsen amidst AmaZulu interest

Magesi FC chairman Solly Makhubela has addressed the speculation surrounding head coach Clinton Larsen’s potential move to AmaZulu FC.

This comes as AmaZulu seeks a replacement for Pablo Franco Martin, whose tenure ended after a string of poor results left the club at the bottom of the DStv Premiership table.

Martin’s departure was triggered by a dismal start to the season, with AmaZulu suffering three consecutive defeats. A 2-1 loss to Polokwane City FC on the opening day was followed by a comprehensive 3-1 defeat to Kaizer Chiefs at their home ground, Moses Mabhida Stadium.

The final straw came with a 1-0 loss to Marumo Gallants, sealing Martin’s fate. In his 39 games in charge of Usuthu, Martin managed only 12 wins and 12 draws against 15 losses. AmaZulu also parted ways with Martin’s assistant coach, Aitor Van Den Brule.

WHAT MAGESI CHAIRMAN SAID ABOUT CLINTON LARSEN’S FUTURE

Despite strong interest from Usuthu, Makhubela insists Larsen remains under contract with Magesi and has not received any official approach for the coach’s services. According to the Magesi boss, Larsen is on a two-year deal with the Limpopo side.

“I don’t know anything about AmaZulu’s interest in Clinton Larsen,” Makhubela told FARPost. “I haven’t received any communication from them. The coach is still contracted to us for two years. If they want him, they would have to terminate his contract.”

This statement throws a wrench into AmaZulu’s plans. The club has reportedly identified Larsen as their top target to replace the recently dismissed Pablo Franco Martin. The Durban-based club has already appointed Vusumuzi Vilakazi as their new assistant coach. This fueled speculation that Vilakazi might serve as a temporary solution, while they navigate the complexities of securing Larsen.

Vilakazi’s appointment marks a return to the topflight for the experienced coach, who recently parted ways with Richards Bay FC after successfully guiding them through the PSL promotion/relegation playoffs. Known for his tactical acumen and ability to develop young talent, ‘Kanu’ brings a wealth of experience, having previously served as head coach for both Lamontville Golden Arrows and Richards Bay FC.

However, Makhubela’s unwavering stance on Larsen’s future leaves AmaZulu in a precarious position. With the Carling Knockout Cup looming next weekend, the club faces a race against time to finalise their coaching setup.

Will they pursue negotiations with Magesi to secure Larsen’s release, or will Vilakazi be thrust into the spotlight as the interim head coach?
