Akpeyi on why he encourages more Nigerian footballers to consider SA league

Marumo Gallants goalkeeper Daniel Akpeyi has explained why he’d encourage more Nigerian footballers must consider coming to the Betway Premiership.

The 38-year-ole goalkeeper arrived in SA back in 2015 when he signed for Chippa United, signing from Warri Wolves.

After nearly four years with the Chilli Boys, he switched to Kaizer Chiefs in 2019 to fill in for Itumeleng Khune who was sidelined due to a long-term injury.

He also turned out for Moroka Swallows before they sold their status to his current employers Marumo Gallants.

Having spent almost a decade in South Africa, Akpeyi asserts that the Premier Soccer League provides significant exposure on an international scale.

He believes that Nigerian talent could easily transition to European leagues if they utilise South Africa as a stepping stone.

DANIEL AKPEYI SAYS NIGERIAN TALENT CAN UTILISE THE SA LEAGUE TO GET EXPOSURE

“To be quite honest with you, Nigerians have to consider this league because without disrespect, with all humility, there’s no way you can compare the Nigerian league and the South African league,” explained Akpeyi in an interview with FARPost.

“We have a lot of good players in Nigeria, a lot of good talent in Nigeria but they need this kind of exposure for their talent to be seen around the world.

“It’s not that they cannot be seen in the Nigerian league as well. But the PSL league, like I said initially, is one of the top six leagues in Africa.

“It’s one of the best in the world as well, it’s recognised. With all the talent that we have in Nigeria, if you can find the way in the PSL league, trust me it’s easy to showcase yourself in the world.”

Besides Akpeyi, other Nigerians who ply their trade in the PSL include Etiosa Ighodaro [AmaZulu FC], Olisa Ndah [Orlando Pirates], Stanley Nwabali [Chippa United], Ibraheem Jabaar and Enyinnaya Kazie Godswill [both Stellenbosch FC].
