Andile Jali: The veteran midfielder breathing new life into Chippa United

Chippa United defender Justice Chabalala has heaped praise on veteran midfielder Andile Jali, highlighting his transformative influence on the Chilli Boys.

Speaking at the Carling Knockout Cup launch, Chabalala emphasised Jali’s leadership qualities and his positive impact on team morale.

Jali, a seasoned campaigner with stints at Orlando Pirates, Mamelodi Sundowns, and KV Oostende in Belgium, joined Chippa United this season after parting ways with Moroka Swallows. His arrival has coincided with a promising start for the Chilli Boys, who have recorded two wins, one draw, and a solitary loss in their opening four league games.

The 33-year-old has started three matches for the Eastern Cape side, scoring one goal against Pirates. Due to fitness issues, Jali has yet to finish a game this season, and Chippa coach Kwanele Kopo has been cautious with his playing time. However, his impact on the team remains evident.

“Andile Jali has been very good for us,” Chabalala told FARPost. “He loves young players, gives advice, talks to everyone, and brings the team together. He’s always on top of things and a real leader in our dressing room. We’re blessed to have him.”

Chabalala’s comments suggest that Jali’s influence extends beyond his on-field contributions. The midfielder’s experience and leadership are fostering a sense of unity and purpose within the Chilli Boys squad, a welcome change for a club often associated with instability and internal strife.

“The coaches [Kopo and Thabo September], we have loved everyone, and now we have unity in our squad,” Chabalala explained. “They’re supportive and give us advice. There’s a good atmosphere. It’s what we lacked in the last few seasons.”

The defender also expressed optimism about Chippa United’s prospects for the season, stating that a top-eight finish is a realistic goal. He believes the team has moved past its “relegation team” tag and is ready to compete at a higher level.

“Everyone says we fight relegation, but last season, we were safe with seven games to go,” Chabalala added. “I think we can do better. I think we’ll do it. We’re no longer a relegation team.”

With Jali providing guidance and stability, Chippa appears to be a team on the rise. The Chilli Boys will be hoping to continue their strong start to the season when they face TS Galaxy in the Carling Knockout Cup.
