Gerald Phiri Jr resurfaces at Baroka FC

Malawian International Gerald Phiri Jr has been spotted at his former club Baroka FC as the search for a new club continues.

Phiri Jr left Baroka in 2021 while they were still participating in the premiership division.

He went on to join Sudanese giants Al Hilal Sports Club. However, his stay at Hilal was cut short due to the ongoing civil war in that country.

He told FARPost earlier this year that he decided to terminate his contract at Al Hilal for his own safety. But the 31-year-old has not been attached to any club since his return to South Africa despite training with Betway Premiership side Magesi FC for a few days.

FARPost spotted the left-footed midfielder during a club’s event in Lebowakgomo, Limpopo on Tuesday.

“He is still going to be assessed and we will see if we can help each other,” club boss Khurishi Mphahlele told FARPost.

“If he can help the team, he can be our addition to the team. He is welcome here. If he can add value to the team then we will welcome him.”

BAROKA FC BOSS KHURISHI MPHAHLELE FULLY BEHIND INTERIM COACH JAY JAY HLUGWANE

Meanwhile, Mphahlele has reiterated that current interim coach Foster Amukelani Hlungwane will be in charge and will receive full support as long as he brings results. Hlongwane has been in charge of the team since the departure of coach Morgan Mammila. From the four games that he has been in charge, Hlongwane has collected eight out of a possible 12 points.

“He is doing well. If it’s not broken why fix it? We are helping him and we hope that he can do even more,” said Mphahlele.

“We wish to keep him forever if he can do more. So we are closely monitoring the performance of the team.”
