Given Mashikinya set to join a PSL club

Former Sekhukhune United and Polokwane City FC midfielder Given Mashikinya is set to join a new PSL club in the current 2024/25 season.

Mashikinya has been a free agent after parting ways with the Rise and Shine after the end of the 2023/24 campaign.

At Polokwane City FC, he made 29 appearances in all competitions, scoring two goals and grabbing an assist.

Polokwane City were initially coached by Lehlohonolo Seema during that campaign, but he departed for Sekhukhune United ahead of the new season. Phuti Mohafe subsequently took the reins and guided the team to an eighth-place finish in the league, securing their spot in the MTN8.

The central midfielder was previously let go by Sekhukhune United after just six months with the club following the conclusion of the 2022/23 season. He had joined Babina Noko from Maritzburg United [now known as Durban City FC] in January 2023.

Mashikinya’s football journey has also included stints with the now-defunct Mpumalanga Black Aces and Bloemfontein Celtic.

FARPost has learnt from a trusted source that Mashikinya is set to join Motsepe Foundation Championship side Baroka FC on a free transfer.

Due to his experience, the 33-year-old will aim to add more value to Bakgakga squad. The club is still aiming to return to the SA top-flight after being relegated back in the 2020/21 season after a poor run of form. In that season, they finished at the bottom with 25 points. This was after six victories, seven draws, and 17 defeats.

In the 2024/25 Baroka have had a slow start with nine points in six matches. They have registered two victories, three draws and suffered one defeat.

They started the season with outspoken coach Morgan Mammila, but he was fired after just two matches following a draw and a loss. Now Baroka are led by Amukelani Foster Hlungwane on an interim basis until they get a new permanent coach.

With Mashikinya’s announcement imminent, he may feature for the club after the international break. Baroka will take on Durban City FC on Saturday, 19 October. Kickoff at Chatsworth Stadium is at 3:30PM.
